The colors of Marrakech, Part I

Posted on Nov 4, 2016

I’ve been quite surprised about Marrakech. I wasn’t expecting to find this colorful place where the street of the old Medina looks like a labyrinth! With this post (and the next one) I will try to get back the memories of this trip with the pictures I’ve shot in Marrakech.
Like usual for my trip, my photo equipment was very small to let me travel light. I’ve brought with me the trustful Fujifilm X100T with the Fujifilm X-pro2 and the 16mm f/1.4. I’ve to say that honestly, I forgot at home the 35mm f/1.4 that is still small and light. With it, I could get some more portraits of the people of Marrakech. Well, I don’t know if at the end I was going to use it since I’ve noticed that the people of Marrakech don’t like so much to be photographed. So the wide lens lets me capture more the environment and the streets.

The arrival to Marrakech: the adventure in the taxi

Like almost every aspect of Marrakech, also the Taxi payment has to be negotiated. This is something totally different from what we European are used, but it’s part of the Marrocco’s culture! The Taxi car was quite old (just to be positive about it) and was a funny “experience” to see the quite chaotic traffic of the old city center in the evening!

The Riad Khol

We’ve spent our holiday staying at the Riad Khol. I’ve found the place looking at Booking.com and honestly, we were amazed about the place. The Riad is a traditional Marrocco’s house that has different gardens and floors. It was very nice since we didn’t have a traditional room like in a hotel but a small apartment structured on two floors with a small living room, a bedroom, and a nice terrace.
The breakfast was delicious: a wonderful selection of fresh juice with Coffè, traditional mint The, pancakes and fresh yogurt prepared at the Riad. The place for the breakfast itself was stunning since is one of the garden of the Riad with a beautiful fountain in the center of this small square. All the workers were really kind and helpful, so we can say that was a lovely place to stay in Marrakech and definitely I suggest it to everyone!

On the streets of Marrakech

Walking in the streets of Marrakech isn’t easy without a proper map: especially the roads of the old Medina, the one with the market, are like a labyrinth ’cause the walls are high and you cannot see what’s around. Beside this, walking in this place is quite picturesque with all the object that is sold and the different smells of spices that the sellers have in their shops.

Palais de la Bahia

This is one of the places we’ve enjoyed the most during our stay in Marrakech. The palace is composed of different rooms and little gardens that you can visit. I was amazed at the beautiful patterns of the decorative motif in the Palais de la Bahia!
