OnePlus 6T: portrait session in the night

Posted on Nov 4th, 2018

In this post I want to share some photos I’ve took during a night portrait session, using the OnePlus 6T smartphone.

The situation was quite challenging since we shot after the sunset in some of the darkest and tiny streets of Florence: my goal was, first of all, to not get around too many tourists in the pictures, then to control the light.

For this series of photos, my setup, besides the OnePlus 6T camera using the Portrait Mode, was a strip LED light from Yongnuo. This led light looks almost like a laser sword, or, if you allow me to compare, to an air traffic light signal! 🙂

In any case, this Yongnuo LED light is doing his function quite good: you can set the intensity of the LED light and balance the color getting a warmer light to compensate better the front and background.

One of the things I want to point out is that only shooting with the smartphone I was able to control the session alone. With the light in one hand and the smartphone in the other, I was able to do the photos without any extra help. With a camera setup that would be impossible and I would have to need an assistant to help me in the shooting.

About the quality of the photos shot with the OnePlus 6T, I can say that the general quality is good! In this difficult low light situation (the camera metered from 800 to 2000 ISO!) the portrait mode works quite well, with a good mask separation from the front and the background.

The general detail zooming in is convincing. There’s offcourse some softening from the noise reduction, but I would say that the balance from noise to signal is good.

Ciao Akhil, thanks for your kind message! My suggestion for you is to work on these two important things in photography: composition and light. Photography without light is nothing but also the correct light play a great value on your photos. And try to be minumal in your photos, placing less elements inside it, to get more attention to what is your subject! Hope it will help find your way in photography! 🙂

Ciao Jacek, thank you so much for your comment! Hearing it from a professional photographer is something even more important for me! For my review I’m always trying, besides the device I’m using, to give also something artistic, to push the device in the way to achieve something that is meaningful and joyful to look at! Thanks again and let’s keep in touch since more new contents are coming! 🙂
