On the roads of Florence, doing some portrait photographs with Mary. In this photo session, I could use a Leica M9 camera with the Leica 75mm Summicron f/2.
I found that the Leica 75mm f/2 Summicron lens is great. I had also the opportunity to test the Leica 35mm Summilux that is another amazing and great value lens: that lens was amazing sharp already at f/1.4.
Leica camera is a unique universe starting from pure manual focus through the telemeter. I thought I wasn’t able to get enough good sharp images, instead, I’ve to say that I got all my images perfectly focused! The procedure, of course, is not as fast as using an autofocus system, but in general, getting a bit of expertise, you can get enough precision in your manual focus photos!
Leica is a camera that let you think about the photo you’re doing it: you have to frame, to compose the picture, to set manually the aperture and time and then to focus manually too.
Every picture you take is a great satisfaction. I found, however, disappointing the overall picture quality of the Leica M9: I think that the old CCD sensor used is not up to the task: it’s very easy to blow up the highlight and have no opportunity to recover it from the file.
I would say that shooting with Leica is a bit like shooting with Film Slides where the dynamic range was restricted, so you should pay attention more to the highlights than the opposite.
In my opinion, the performance using higher Iso setting is also not comparable to other cameras. Would be nice to test the new Leica M to see the improvement done with the new CMOS sensor (even if someone complain ’cause CMOS sensors has different color reproduction compared to the CCD).
I found the colors with this Leica M9 camera and lens very amazing: the red and yellows really pop out.
