Portrait photos with Sigma 50mm f/1.4 in Tuscany

This blog post cover a photo shooting session for a photo book with Veronica. It was a good occasion to test the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens.

There’s lot of buzz around the web about the Sigma 50mm f/1.4. Someone say it’s quite better than the Canon f/1.4, someone says it’s even comparable to the superb Canon 50 f/1.2.

Well with those consideration in mind I had the chance to do a test with those three lens.
First statement: the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 is quite better than Canon 50mm f/1.4. There’s really no match. The lens offer a superb quality bokeh, far superior than the Canon lens, and the sharpness of the lens at f/1.4 is quite superior than the Canon f/1.4.

More difficult is to compare the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 with the Canon f/1.2.

The first lens costs about 500€ while the second one about 1400€. I’ve found that Sigma can really compete with the costly Canon! At f/1.4 both the Canon 1.2 and the Sigma 1.4 offer great quality and sharpness at the center of the frame, with a little advantage on the Sigma lens. In my opinion Canon offers better quality on the flare when you point directly the lens on the sun and a more silent autofocus motor. And offcourse you can have more light coming with the 1.2 aperture that Sigma lens doesn’t have.

Following down here some photos I took in a photosession with Veronica, using Sigma 50 f/1.4 lens. All photos were taken at f/1.4 aperture with Canon 5d Mk2.
