Marizela Croazia Photo Alessandro Michelazzi

Photo Shoot in Croatia, black and white photos using the split toning technique

Posted on Jul 11, 2014

Photographs I took with Croatian model Marizela, all in natural light with the use of a reflector panel to lift up the shadows and get a strong contrast as we were looking for.

I’ve used Lightroom to convert the raw color photo in black and white: this is the workflow I suggest to everyone. The way you can edit the tones in Lightroom is much more effective than shooting directly in black and white from the camera in jpg.

To achieve those warm tones in the black and white photos I’ve used the split toning technique: giving a warm tone to the highlights and the shadow you can mimic a vintage print on warm color paper.

The location for the photos was on the Croatian coast of Rovinj’s city: this is a very special place where every year I organize in the summer workshop of portrait photography.

For this photo session, I’ve used the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom lens.
